Congregational Mission Teams

A fundamental part of FUMC's is a mission-driven congregation. We have several mission teams that have served in many capacities over the years. We have a VIM Team, an Africa Team, and our Youth Team.

VIM (Volunteers in Mission) Team

VIM is designed to provide an official wy for Christians to offer their skills and talents for Christian service at home and around the world on short term assignments at their own expense. Their work includes construction and renewing of mission facilities, teaching, witnessing, conducting medical clinics, conducting Bible study or Bible School for children, and serving in disaster relief efforts around the world.

Over the years our VIM teams have served in many locations throughout the United States. Most recently they served:

  • 2006 | Post-Katrina in Bayou Le Batre, Alabama

  • 2007 | Gulfport, Mississippi

  • 2008 | 2nd trip to Bayou Le Batre, Alabama

  • 2011 | Nashville, Tennessee

  • 2017 | Rev. Luis Centeno Outreach Ministry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Africa Missions Team

The Africa Missions Team went to serve at the Children of Zion Village in Katima Mulilo, Namibia, Africa in 2011. Children of Zion Village is an orphanage that FUMC has supported from the onset of the ministry there. While there, the team assisted with the care of the children living at the orphanage, painted the children's homes, dug a septic drainage area, and helped with the healthcare of the children and house parents of the orphanage.

The 2017 Africa Missions Team also went and served at the Children of Zion Village in Katima Mulilo, Namibia, Africa. While there, the team assisted with helping to build an incinerator for burning, sewing curtains, and laminated school papers to make into school books so they last longer. They also had Bible studies, helped tutor the children in their schoolwork, offered a mini-VBS, and played with the children.

Over the years our Youth Missions Groups have served locally and throughout the United States. Most recently they served in:

  • 2009 | Steubenville OH

  • 2011 | Bayou La Batre, AL

  • 2011 | Boston, MA

  • 2012 | Boston, MA

Youth Missions

Our youth mission teams are designed to create opportunities for students and adults to grow and serve together, and to model the love of Jesus Christ in mission, ministry, and lifestyle. We focus on servant leadership and ministry. Although we use work projects as a tool to express and see the love of Christ, it is not an end all. We value relationships and spiritual growth above all “works.” We desire to be Christ centered in everything that we do, and to serve the community and one another in excellence. While it is important to be challenged in our projects and ministry work, we believe the most important thing we can do is to live out the love of Christ with all whom we meet. Building true relationships is essential in showing Christ's love; the friendships we create with people in the communities that we serve are of the utmost importance. These relationships are more important to us than any work we could accomplish. Our mission trips have a variety of ministry experiences that are designed to challenge teens and adults alike. The opportunities vary from day to day and site to site, depending on the particular needs of the communities in which we serve. The leadership of the Youth Mission teams firmly believes there is a need for people to have their homes rehabilitated; a need for children to learn about the Bible through music, stories and games; and a need to serve existing community ministries. We believe the relationships we develop with those in the communities we serve will create a vehicle for ministry to occur for a long time in the future. We are ready to experience the joy of being the hands and feet of Christ!
